How to Maintain Your Wood Privacy Fence

A wood privacy fence is one of the best investments you can make for your property — but like any natural material, wood needs regular care to stay strong and attractive. Here are the key maintenance steps we recommend to our Tulsa-area customers.

Clean Your Fence Annually

Dirt, mold, and mildew will accumulate on wood over time, especially in Oklahoma’s humid summers. A simple cleaning once a year goes a long way:

  • Use a garden hose or pressure washer on a low setting
  • For stubborn mildew, mix 1 cup bleach with 1 gallon of water and scrub with a brush
  • Let the fence dry completely (at least 48 hours) before applying any sealant or stain

Stain or Seal Every 2–3 Years

Bare wood absorbs moisture, which causes swelling, cracking, and rot. A penetrating wood stain or sealant creates a protective barrier. Tips:

  • Oil-based stains penetrate deeper and typically last longer in Oklahoma’s temperature swings
  • Apply with a brush or roller for even coverage
  • Always stain on a dry day with no rain in the forecast for 24–48 hours

Inspect for Damage Each Spring

After winter, walk your fence line and look for:

  • Cracked or warped boards
  • Posts that have shifted or leaned
  • Nails or screws that have worked loose
  • Signs of rot (soft, discolored wood near the ground)

Catching small problems early prevents expensive repairs later.

Keep Vegetation Trimmed Back

Vines, shrubs, and tall grass pressed against your fence trap moisture and accelerate rot. Keep a few inches of clearance around fence boards and posts.

Address Rot Immediately

If you find a rotting board or post, replace it promptly. Rot spreads to neighboring boards quickly. When replacing posts, consider using concrete footings— this keeps the wood out of constant ground contact.
